What is Antenatal Care?

Antenatal care refers to the regular medical check-ups, screenings, and guidance that a pregnant woman receives to monitor the progress of her pregnancy. This care helps identify and manage potential complications early, ensures fetal development, and prepares the mother for a safe delivery.

Ideally, antenatal care should begin as soon as pregnancy is confirmed—preferably within the first 6–8 weeks.

Typically once a month until 28 weeks, bi-weekly until 36 weeks, then weekly until delivery. High-risk pregnancies may require more frequent visits.

Blood pressure, urine tests, blood sugar, hemoglobin levels, ultrasound scans, and fetal heart rate monitoring.

A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, protein, and prenatal vitamins like iron, calcium, and folic acid.

Severe abdominal pain, bleeding, dizziness, swelling, vision changes, or reduced fetal movement should be reported immediately.
